Even the most superfluous of blogs like fashion or humour blogs help people to put their outfits together or simply puts a smile on your face.

A blog that is profitable is a blog that helps people to solve a problem. It gives thorough information and actionable tips to persons looking for solutions. The content on a profitable blog is usually set out like this.

There are several ways to monetize a blog to turn it into an income earner. The main ways: advertising, sponsorships, brand collaborations, selling your own products (physical or digital) and affiliate marketing are great ways to make your blog earn for you.

If you want to make money online, a blog is an excellent way to do this.

3. You want to establish a presence online.

Whether you already have a business, you’re a service provider or you’re a public figure of any kind, you need a blog. A blog attracts new customers, provides ways to connect with existing customers and can help you to show your authority in your niche online. Even for brick and mortar businesses, it is a good idea to have a blog that provides information on your products.

This helps to sell to a wider audience and provide searchable information to customers seeking solutions that you provide.

For a public figure, a blog can serve as your resume and house your credentials and past work. You can write articles on your subject area to establish your expertise and set yourself apart from your competition.

You never know where this blogging thing might take you. Every opportunity I have had after my first job was through my blog.

From writing about attractions and accommodations in my beloved country to landing high paying jobs doing things I loved, the opportunities are truly endless.

Many a blogger has gone on to land TV deals, book deals, clothing lines, etc. Maybe you’ll be able to sell those parrot hats! Don’t limit yourself to what your career has offered so far, put yourself out there and see what comes.

Should I Blog or Stick to Instagram Blogging?

This is a question I see a lot of inside Facebook groups for bloggers and I’m always left wondering, what’s an Instagram blog?

How to Start a Profitable Blog

Starting a blog that makes money can be challenging but it is definitely a worthwhile undertaking if it’s something you truly want to pursue. It’s important to do it the right way from the beginning if its something you’ve made up your mind to do, especially if you plan to monetize. I’ve written a comprehensive yet easy beginner’s guide to starting a profitable blog here.

Getting your blog up and running by following that course is only the first step. Now you need to actually get it to be profitable. Most bloggers will tell you that they were profitable 6 months to a year into their blogs. Luckily for you, there are blogs like this one that help you to cut to the chase and get profitable right out the gate with tested strategies.

Tip number one, start with a self-hosted blog. This is the only way to go if you’re serious about turning your blog into a business. I use Siteground to host all my blogs because they are very affordable and their customer service is quick and superb. I also experience virtually no downtime with them and this is crucial when you’re depending on a blog for your income.

One strategy I have tested and proven is to begin writing about popular topics and launching your blog with lots of content from the start. This way, you can work the Pinterest monster to bring you a huge amount of traffic as soon as you’ve launched. Then, you can begin to scale back on creating content and work on monetizing and growing your traffic.

Don’t worry that you’ll be writing about what everybody is already writing about. Worry not about the blogging market being saturated. The internet isn’t even at 100% penetration worldwide as yet. There are new people coming online every single day. What if you were the one to get to them first? 

Even those who have maybe read something similar to what you’ve written might prefer the way you write about it because of your own personal style and the way you explain the information. My Very Honest Siteground Review

In order to start a blog, you will need to find a host who will literally house your blog and all the files that will be associated with it (images, blog posts, PDFs, emails, etc)

There are free hosts and there are paid hosts. Free hosts limit your earning ability greatly while paid hosts offer greater ownership over your blogging business. Paid hosts are what is referred to as a self-hosted blog. It means you’re the owner of your blog and its contents and can do anything you want with it.

I advocate 100% for starting a self-hosted blog from jump and I break down all the reasons why it can be dangerous to blog on a free site here. If you’re not sure about blogging for income and just want to test things out, then a free platform can help you to decide if this path is right for you. Once you have decided that you love to blog and want to make money from it, you definitely need to become self-hosted.

I also wrote a blog post breaking down how to start a blog, giving you all the steps from idea to creation. Today, I will be getting really granular to help my beginner bloggers to install WordPress blogs on the blog host I use and love, Siteground.

I have been with Siteground since 2010, so believe me when I say I am experienced enough to recommend them. I started out on free WordPress like many of you and then moved to Blogger.com thinking it was better because I could put ads on it even though it was free.

I quickly realised that I was going to get nowhere fast if I didn’t move to self-hosting and in my research even back then, Siteground stood out to me.

My site has been down a grand total of one time since I have been with them and as soon as I noticed, they had it back up in no time.

Their customer service is around the clock which is super great for people like me who like to fiddle with codes in the backend of my blog and then mess around and break the whole thing and need it restored ASAP.

Security is also big for me as well because I have had my site hacked before but once I figured out what was making my site vulnerable, I was able to quickly clean my site and secure it with plugins I recommend in my how to start a blog post.

Now, Siteground keeps track of malicious code being added to my site and will even tell me where it is so if I’m hacked, I can easily go in and remove any code left behind by the hackers.

I have been around the blogosphere seeing other bloggers recommending Bluehost but if you’ve perused blogging Facebook groups then you’ve also seen widespread complaints about how sucky their customer service is.

If you’re a new blogger, you want to go with a company who will be there for you. I wholeheartedly recommend Siteground.

How to Set Up SiteGround and Install WordPress

The first part of this tutorial assumes you’re brand new to Siteground and want to know how to start your WordPress blog with their hosting. The first thing you want to do is head over to Siteground.

1 Select Your Plan

As a new blogger, the StartUp plan is perfect for you. It allows you to host one blog/website with up to roughly 10,000 monthly visits. You can always scale up if you need to, which would be a great problem to have.

I currently have the middle plan, GrowBig, not because my blog is booming out of space, which I wish it was, but because I have multiple blogs.

Select the plan that is right for you and click on Get Started.

2 Select Your Domain Name

Your domain name is free with your hosting plan on Siteground. Sweet! If you have one already, you can select the “I already have a domain” option and they will help you to bring it over to work with your new hosting account.

Once you’ve selected an available name, click proceed.

3 Complete Registration

Enter your registration information here and proceed.

Now you’ll get a chance to lock in your very low price for up to three years if you’d like. This is super sweet guys because I currently don’t pay these prices anymore per year. I pay the regular annual price now that my three years are up so if you really feel like blogging is for you, lock in this price for three years. If that intimidates you a little bit, then go ahead and select one year.

If your dreams don’t scare you, they’re not big enough.

On this screen, you’ll also get a chance to add any extras if you’d like. The one I recommend is domain privacy. This hides the information that you just entered into registration as this information is actually public.

Anyone can look up who the owner of a domain name is and get your name, email address and phone number without purchasing domain privacy so consider this addon if that bothers you.

On the next screen you’ll enter your credit card information and you’re all set up! Now let’s go inside of Siteground to install WordPress.

4 Using the Siteground Website Wizard

The wizard will walk you through installing WordPress quite easily. Click on get WordPress preinstalled on this account and hit proceed.

Here you will select a username and password for your WordPress blog. You can enter your personal email here or you can create a new one later like myname@yournewblog.com

I recommend creating an email like that as it is more professional. Isn’t it cool to have an email that is at your new blog’s domain? Don’t worry that it isn’t created yet, you can do this after as your email account is also free with Siteground just like your domain name.

Enter a username but do not use admin and do not use the name of your blog. It makes it too easy for hackers to guess what your username is and possibly hack into your site. Select a strong password and move on.

Select a theme. Don’t stress over a theme right now, you will install a better one later. Just select any theme for now.

Congrats! Your new blog is already created and you’re ready to start blogging! The admin URL is where you will now access your blog. You won’t need to head to Siteground anymore to access your blog. Now, you’re ready to post!

How to Use WordPress in Siteground to Create Your Blog Posts

When you click on that admin URL and log in using the username and password you just entered, this is what your WordPress backend will look like. Your dashboard will have a few things at the stop that you can do to begin designing your new blog.

Maybe you want to install a theme first or install a few plugins. Maybe you want to immediately start creating posts so that your site will have content when you’re ready to launch.

On the left-hand side where all your options are, you’ll click on post and add new to write a post. If you do this then you’ll be taken to a screen to write and you’re well on your way.

How to Install WordPress Via the Cpanel

If you’re not using the installation wizard to install WordPress on your blog then this video I created will walk you through the process of installing Siteground via the Cpanel area. It’s a good one to watch because you will need to get comfortable in your Cpanel area as there are lots of cool features there to compliment your new blog, like a brand new email. How to create your new email is next.

In the video you see I select the username that’s the same name as the blog. Don’t do this. I’ve already changed it, it was just for the video.

How to Create Your Email Address for Your Blog in Siteground

In the video above you saw how to access the Cpanel area in Siteground. It’s a big red button at the top of your account area in Siteground, you can’t miss it. Scroll down to mail and click on Email Accounts.

You will be taken to this screen where you can select an email to create and a password for your new email. Once you do this and click on create account, your new email address is created. You can access it always at yoursite.com/webmail but let’s take that a step further.

Scroll down to your new email address and click on more. You will see the option to configure an email client. Click that.

On this screen, you will see the settings that you can use to install your new email address on your Mac, PC or smartphone.

You can also integrate this email into your Gmail or other email service provider so that you won’t have to deal with multiple emails on your phone, if you’d like.

Now, you’re a Siteground blogging WordPress master! Go you!

Why is this one the ultimate blueprint over all the others? Because I have learnt valuable lessons over the years that many bloggers have not. I’ve been blogging long enough to know what can happen and how to protect yourself from blogging vulnerabilities.

I’ve also worked with many different hosts and themes and plugins and tools that you’ll need. I have some favourites that I think will set you up with a solid blog foundation. Once your foundation is solid, you’re free to build your amazing blog.

Now, it has been a while since I started a brand new blog. So am I really qualified to advise you on how to start one? I mean, I started my blog so many years ago, right?

It is for that reason that I created this brand new blog. Instead of incorporating blogging posts on my current blog, I want to build this blog up and grow along with you.

I documented all the steps I have taken so far in creating this blog. Let’s get into it.

How to Start a Blog

Before we go into step 1, it’s important that you have your reasons for blogging laid out on paper. As with any new project, you’ll need to have your objectives clearly laid out to act as your guide. What are your reasons for starting a blog? What do you hope to accomplish? Who is your target audience? The answers to these questions will tailor the steps that you make to ensure you’re receiving the results you’re looking for.

Remember that for the purposes of this blog, our objectives are always to solve a problem and to make money in doing so. Solving a problem for our audience helps us to connect,  build community and establish authority. With an engaged community, well also be able to monetise our blog through the solutions that we’re providing. Win-win.

However, if you’re not trying to monetise your blog and you just want a place to share your life, you won’t need all these steps. I would still go with the blog for business route, you never know where your life’s stories may take you.

Now that you’re clear on your why and your who, let’s get into the how.

Research and choose your domain name

The name that you’ve chosen will be the footing that your blog stands on. This will be how you brand your business and how you connect with your audience. You’ll want to use something short and catchy that can stand out on search engines and on social media.

You can use NameCheckr to quickly check if your desired name is available as a domain and as a social media handle on all popular platforms. What’s a domain? It’s the .com or .org etc that you will be using for your blog address online. My domain is www.blogwithmo.com

Purchase Domain Name and Hosting Package

Once you’ve selected your name, you’re ready to purchase your web hosting package. Don’t use a free website host as tempting as it may be. Free means you’re the customer and the content that you create is owned by whatever free platform you’ve chosen.

That means they could erase your site at any given moment and you would have no reprieve. You want to own your content. I break down how dangerous it could be to not self-host your blog in this post.

I’ve read a million blog posts on web hosting and I continue to recommend the one I use, Siteground. It’s not the absolute cheapest but it’s not far off and you know what they say about going with the cheapest possible option.

Siteground has always been able to help me at a moment’s notice through their live chat whenever I run into technical difficulty. Their customer service, lack of downtime (BIG WIN) and ease of use in these 7 years I have been with them is why I continue to sing their praise. Here’s a post with a detailed tutorial on getting started with Siteground, including pics and video.

When you’re purchasing your hosting package, you will receive your domain name free for the first year. They will also help you to move your domain name over to them if you already have one.

Bluehost is another popular website host that’s even more affordable. Depending on what your budget is you may choose to go with them for your hosting needs.

Install WordPress and a Theme

Once you’ve bought your hosting package and you’re all set up, you’ll want to install WordPress. WordPress is the platform you will use to write all your posts.

There are other platforms available for sure, Joomla, Drupal etc, but WordPress is by far the most popular amongst bloggers worldwide. And for good reason, ease of use being the main one. I have used Joomla before and I’m so happy I don’t anymore.

Once you’ve installed WordPress, you’ll need a theme. The theme is the design of your blog. You can either install a free theme, work with a designer to create something from scratch or purchase a premium theme.

You know how I feel about free. Free is great for some things, but when it comes to your business, you want to invest in something that will reflect the standard you’re trying to set.

Purchasing a premium theme gives you the plug and play ease you’re looking for while still giving you a gorgeous, custom website look and feel. Go with free and you may end up looking the same as a ton of other blogs out there. And the aim is to stand out.

My favourite premium theme, the one I use on all my blogs is the Divi from Elegant Themes. It’s a beautiful drag and drop page builder allowing you to create a custom theme by dropping any type of section anywhere you choose.

This is great for me for those moments when I really love a function of a theme but wished it were somewhere else on the page. Or wished it were a little bigger or had one more row or one more image column. You get the point. Divi is the absolute best.

Bluchic also has some beautiful and professional themes for you to browse and choose from. It may be a little easier if you just want something plug and play without tinkering with drag and drop page builders.

Same for Blossom Themes, I love their feminine but yet professional themes! Going this route may be easier on the pocket if you’re just buying one theme.

I have multiple sites plus love the flexibility of being able to refresh my blog with a different look by moving around elements instead of installing a whole new theme.

Install Plugins – These are all the ones I use

Once you’ve installed WordPress, you’ll need a host of plugins to extend its functionality beyond basic word processing. The list of plugins varies far and wide, however, the ones I recommend you install right away are below.

1. Yoast SEO – SEO is extremely important for the content that you’ll be creating and will be spoken about extensively on this blog. SEO stands for search engine optimization and it’s what will be one of the driving factors of traffic to your site. Optimizing your posts with keywords that people are looking for using search engines, will help these search engines to point them to your solutions. Yoast is an excellent plugin to help guide that process so you’re not missing any possible opportunities.
2. Shareaholic – This plugin allows readers to share your posts to their favourite social media channels. You can customize it to include floating sharing buttons or buttons above and below your blog posts. You can also use it to monetize your posts with ads, though I do not use it for this purpose. Be sure to go through all its settings and turn that off. (Again, if you’re using Divi you won’t need a separate plugin for this as Elegant Themes has a sharing plugin called Bloom)
3. Sucuri Security – This plugin is not an option. WordPress sites can be very vulnerable to spam and malware attacks and should be protected from all angles. This is one of the best I’ve found and I used it to help me clean up my site after I found out it was hacked.
4. Loginizer Security – This is also a security plugin that helps to prevent login attempts to your blog admin area. It sends you an alert whenever anyone, yourself included, tries to log in to your WordPress admin area. I have both installed.
5. Insert Headers and Footers – I use this plugin to place codes in the header and footer section of my blog. Various other sites that need access to your blog, like Google Analytics and Pinterest, will give you codes to place in your blog’s header to verify site ownership. This is a great way to place those codes without going into your theme’s code and mistakingly messing up anything there. If you’re using a premium theme like Divi, then this isn’t necessary as Divi has its own built-in area to place your header codes.
6. WP Cache or another caching plugin – caching keeps your website super fast. No one likes a slow-moving website and your page speed is a Google ranking factor so be sure to install one for a better user experience.

There are other plugins that you may choose to use for various other functionalities. These that I have selected will give you the start you need.

Set Up Social Media Channels and Email List Builder

By now you’re well on your way to launching your brand new blog. You’ll want to secure the social media handles to go along with your blog as well as your email list builder. When you purchased your hosting, you would have gotten email accounts included in the package. Create one to use along with your blog.

You may already have free Gmail emails, but remember what I said about free. You won’t be able to use free email accounts to send out emails to your mailing list. Plus, your new email may also be used to create new social media accounts. Chances are your old email is currently being used on your personal handles.

Decide which social media channels are best for you based on where your audience is. If you’re blogging for profit then you cannot overlook Pinterest. Be sure to set up a Pinterest business account and a Facebook Page for your blog. Other channels optional based on what your topics are and what you choose to blog about.

Even if you focus on only one or two main social media channels for growth and engagement, go ahead and create accounts on all the majors. This prevents someone else from taking these names and who knows, you may find them useful in the future.

You absolutely must set up your email list builder. Far too many blogs are not utilizing email marketing and this will be where your bread and butter will come from! Set one up right out the box and begin to collect emails from your visitors.

You can try Mailerlite since it’s free for your first 1000 subscribers, relatively easy to use and has advanced features like email sequences and automation. I also have used and loved Convertkit as my email service provider, though this option is a little more pricey and also a little more sophisticated and feature-packed.

Write!

Ok, enough setup. Start writing already! There are definitely still other things to be done but you can figure it out along the way. If you wait until your blog is perfect, you may never ever start.

For instance, I launched this blog without my logo design. I did a simple one in Canva to begin with while my graphic designer perfected the one I currently use. If you’ve made it this far, you’re ready to launch your new blog and unleash your talents and wit onto the world.

What is important is to continuously read. Read other blogs in your niche to see what’s current and read blogs about blogging. You will always pick up tips, tricks and blog post ideas by reading work your fellow bloggers put out. So keep an eye out there and take in all the content you can.

I truly love to write, to help others and to connect with a community of like-minded individuals. Blogging is something that you have to be self-motivated about. If you don’t love it, you won’t have the drive to chip away at it every day.

You won’t have the passion to put your all into it. Sure, you may love money and think this is an easy way to get loads of it.

But if you’re not actually passionate about the craft of blogging? Then you probably won’t be any good at it.

Then, you won’t bring in the big bugs you’re looking for. Lose-lose.

You Don’t Like to Write

Maybe you are passionate about something, but tapping away at a keyboard for hours each day isn’t your thing. If you do not like to write, but you want to have a blog as your form of online presence, then outsource that part of it.

Jump onto Fiverr, Contentmart or link with a talented writer that you like and hire them to do the writing part of things for you. Approach the blog as a business, you buy the product, in this case, the articles and then promote them online.

There are blogs out there that are very popular that have all outsourced content. These blogs are making their owners money without them having to bother writing a word. Win-win!

You Have a Large Social Media Following and Think This will Translate Well into a Blog

There are tons of social media influencers out there who have large adoring followers encouraging them to start a blog. But then the quality of the writing is so poor that the following is turned off. don’t be that person.

You don’t actually need a blog to make money online. Tons of influencers are paid thousands of dollars to post on Instagram daily. Don’t feel as if you must start a blog if you truly don’t want to or it’s not a strong skillset of yours.

You’re Only in it for the Money

Your readers will be able to tell when there’s no passion or authenticity behind your words if you’re not truly passionate about the subject. The best blogs out there have a genuine personality and are authentic to their core.

Again, if you really only want to make money, outsource the writing. Approach the blog as a business and recognise that your own content may not be the best.

Work with a group of writers who get your vision and can churn out articles that will connect with the audience you’re targeting.

You’re Strapped for Time and Won’t be Consistent

If you recognise right away that you won’t be able to publish content regularly, then a blog isn’t what you need. Stick with a static website that is only updated when there’s something that you need to update.

The whole point of a blog is to provide information regular to readers. If you’re not updating consistently, then you’re not attracting new visitors like you could be nor are you showing up as you would like to in search results.

Consider adding a blog aspect to that website later, as we’ve already discussed the benefits of blogging.

You’re Not Self-Motivated

Or you’re not organized. Luckily, if you want to be successful in blogging, you’ll get it together as soon as you realise that you’ve gotta put in the work!

See, there’s no boss telling you what to do and there’s no pay if you don’t put in the work. There’s no sick days or 3-hour lunch breaks. Blogging is a full-time venture. You write, then you promote, then you engage with others, then you research and write some more. It’s never-ending.

BUT, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. If your blog does take off and become successful, then you enter into the realm of passive income. Then you won’t need to go at it so hard. But for now, get to work, pedal to the ground. Grind grind grind!

It can be hard to find reasons why one should not start a blog. A blog is a great way to connect with your audience, be that customers, readers, family, whoever.

But there are definitely some main reasons why one should not get into blogging and I’ve presented them here. Can you think of any other reasons why it’s not a good idea to go into this field?
